Best Vegan Food Mumbai.

Earth Cafe - 100% Vegan & Gluten free

Earth Cafe is a modern, western style cafe. It’s probably the place I ate most often out of everywhere on this list. Everything on the menu is totally vegan and gluten free. As well as a full restaurant menu serving burgers (incl. The Beyond Meat Burger), pasta, salads, rice bowls, tacos etc they also have a full vegan bakery and dessert counter, selling an array of cakes, tarts and pastries and even vegan croissants! Although there were so many options to choose from, I must admit I had the same cake everytime I went. It was so good that I didn’t get to try any of their other options. The dessert in question was the “Chocolate Hazelnut Cake”, which was moist, rich and full of flavour. I took everyone I know to eat that cake and everyone absolutely devoured it and kept going back for more! Now that I’ve had a little rant about the best cake in the world; I should also mention that Earth Cafe sell international and locally sourced vegan products such as: vegan spreads, avocado oil, locally made chocolate truffles, in house chocolate hazelnut spread as well as home products such as candles. I would definitely say to visit Earth Cafe when in Mumbai if you’re craving dessert and vegan comfort and junk food.

The Tanjore Tiffin Room - Vegan & Non Vegan

I’m really excited to share this restaurant with you, as I think it was some of the best food I ate in India! I was actually introduced to this restaurant by a friend and probably wouldn't have found it otherwise, I’m very lucky to have friends with great taste!. “The Tanjore Tiffin Room” is a South Indian restaurant serving traditional homestyle dishes. Part of the appeal of this restaurant is they allow you to try a little taster of everything before ordering. The staff bring out a small platter of all of the gravies (curries) and different rice selections and let you try everything while explaining what it’s best paired with what. They also make sure of any dietary requirements you might have and steer you away from tasting those options. There’s vegan options such as; jackfruit, mushrooms, pumpkin, cauliflower and you can pair your chosen vegetable with the many different gravies/curries. The uniquely fresh and bold flavours of the curries come from ingredients such as; tamarind, curry leaves and coconut.  Some of my personal favourites were the yellow coconut curry with jackfruit and the Madras railway curry with mushrooms. I also tried appam here for the first time, which I now love!  It’s a savoury but slightly sweet pancake made from a fermented rice and coconut batter. I also have to mention the tamarind rice which was delicious. Definitely visit The Tanjore Tiffin Rooms for some of the best South Indian food in town!

Greenr Cafe - Vegetarian & Vegan

Greenr Cafe have multiple locations in India and they describe themselves as an “urban hub and a neighbourhood space facilitating planet-restoring community actions & plant-based food”. With a focus on plant proteins & sustainability Greenr Cafe is one of the more purpose driven and community based restaurants I visited. Although they are not 100% vegan most dishes are vegan.  It’s best to let one of the servers know that you are vegan so they can advise you on what to avoid as it’s not clearly marked on the menu. And I have to say, the food was amazing! They serve mainly western inspired dishes, some of my favourites were the; Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos, Austin Smoked Jackfruit Earth Bowl (noticing a bit of a Jackfruit trend here. But that’s just me. I love the stuff! They had loads of other taco and earth bowl options too.) and the Himalayan Tofu Amaranth Burger. The coffee and kombucha was really good here too. The cafe is a beautiful, calm place to come and work or hang out for a few hours. They have lots of books you can read as well as locally made crafts for sale. Visit here for great food and chill vibes

Out of the Blue - Vegan & Non Vegan

Out of The Blue is a European-style restaurant with a beautiful courtyard dining space and a dessert/ice cream counter. I would say that Out Of The Blue is a great place to visit if you’re dining with non-vegan friends. While they don’t have as many vegan options as some of the other restaurants I mentioned, the vegan options they do have are great. They serve mainly western dishes like pizzas, pasta, and burgers they even have a vegan cheese fondue! Over at the dessert counter, they have vegan ice-creams and cakes as well as locally made beautifully decorated, brightly coloured chocolates. The cocoa beans are sourced from an Indian farm and crafted in house. 90% of the chocolates are vegan.

Britannia & Co. Restaurant - Vegan & Non Vegan

This restaurant is a little slice of history, down in culturally rich south Mumbai. Britannia & Co. opened its doors in 1923 and is one of the few remaining Parsi Cafes left in Mumbai. The decor which is seemingly unchanged with whizzing ceiling fans and peeling wall paint gives the restaurant its famous quaint and beautifully vintage atmosphere. Here you’ll find mainly Iranian dishes, with the signature dish being the “Berry Pulav”. Unfortunately the vegetarian “Berry Pulav” is no longer vegan, as they cook the rice with ghee. On the bright side the vegetarian “Dhansak” is vegan. Dhansak is a rich but mild curry made with lentils and vegetables. It’s served with rice and everything at this restaurant is served in huge portions, so make sure you bring friends along to share!  Another famous staple here at Britannia & Co. is the  “Pallonji’s” Raspberry Soda which is made locally. They also have ginger and cream soda flavours. When in Mumbai I would highly recommend visiting one of these iconic Iranian Cafes that add so much charm to the city
